Arabic Phrases to Express Deep Sadness

When you are sad, you don’t feel like expressing how you feel, and your words might betray you. This could be more difficult in another language like Arabic. 

So today, we will learn 8 Arabic phrases for a common emotion we all go through at certain times in life – sadness. These sorrowful expressions reflect the impact of the Arabic language in expressing deep emotions.

We are going to see these phrases in examples to make using them easier to use.

Phrase 1: قَلبي مَليءٌ بالحُزن

My heart is full of sorrow

Qalby malyʼun bālḥuzn

Examples

أمثلة

My heart is full of sorrow since hearing that painful news

قَلبي مَليءٌ بالحزنِ مُنذُ سَماعِ تِلكَ الأخبارِ المؤلِمة

I can't find happiness because my heart is full of sorrow

لا أستَطيعُ أن أجِدَ السَّعادة لأن قلبي مَليءٌ بِالحُزن

Every time I remember what happened, I feel my heart full of sorrow

كُلّما تذكّرتُ ما حَدَثَ، أشعرُ أنَّ قلبي مَليءُ بِالحُزن

Phrase 2: أَشعرُ بِثِقلٍ في صَدري

I have a heaviness in my chest

Ashʻru bithiqlin fī ṣadry

Examples

أمثلة

I have felt a heaviness in my chest for a long time, and I don't know how to get rid of it

أشعُرُ بِثقلٍ في صَدري مُنذُ فترةٍ طويلةٍ، ولا أدري كيف أتخلّصُ منه.

Whenever I think about my problems, I feel a heaviness in my chest

كُلّما فكّرتُ في مَشاكِلي، أشعُرُ بِثقلٍ في صدري.

After hearing the bad news, I felt an indescribable heaviness in my chest.

بَعدَ سَماعِ الأخبارِ السّيئةِ، شعرتُ بِثقلٍ في صدري لا يوصَف.

Phrase 3: لا شَيءَ يُخَفِّفُ مِن أَلَمي

Nothing eases my pain

Lā shayʼa yukhaffifu min alamy

Examples

أمثلة

I tried so hard to move on, but nothing eases my pain

حاولتُ كثيرًا أن أتجاوزَ الأمرَ، لكِن لا شيءَ يُخفِّفُ من ألَمي.

No matter what I do, nothing eases my great pain.

مَهما فعلتُ، لا شيءَ يُخفِّفُ من ألمي الكَبير.

Even time hasn't eased my pain; nothing can

حَتّى هَذا الوقت لَم يخفّ ألمي، لا شيء يَستَطيعُ تَخفيفه.

Phrase 4: مِنَ المُحزِنِ أنّ

It's sad that

Mina almuḥzini ann

Examples

أمثلة

It’s sad that you can’t go with us.

من المُحزِنِ أنّك لن تستطيع الذّهاب معنا.

It’s sad that you failed the exam.

من المُحزِنِ أنّك رسبت في الامتحان.

It’s sad that you failed the interview.

من المُحزِنِ أنّك لم تنجح في المُقابلة.

Phrase 5: أَعيشُ أَيَّامًا صَعبَة

I’m living through tough days

Aʻyshu ayyāman ṣaʻbah

Examples

أمثلة

I'm living through tough days, but I'm trying to hold on as much as I can.

أعيشُ أيّامًا صَعبة، لكِنّني أُحاوِلُ التّماسُكَ قدْرَ الإمكان.

I'm living through tough days after losing the dearest person to my heart.

أعيشُ أيّامًا صَعبة بَعد فُقدانِ أعزّ النّاس إلى قلبي.

No one knows that I'm going through tough days, as I'm enduring it alone

لا أحدَ يعلمُ أنّني أعيشُ أيّامًا صَعبة، فأنا أتحمّل وحدي.

Phrase 6: أَشعُرُ بِأَنَّني غارِقٌ في الحُزن

I feel drowned in sorrow

Ashʻuru biʼannany ghāriqun fī alḥuzn

Examples

أمثلة

Every time I remember what happened, I feel drowned in sorrow

كُلّما تذكّرتُ ما حدث، أشعرُ بأنّني غارق في الحُزنِ

I can't escape this feeling; I feel like I'm drowning in sadness

لا أستطيعُ الخُروج من هذا الشعورِ، أشعرُ بأنّني غارقٌ في الحُزن

I feel so overwhelmed by sadness that I can't think clearly

أشعرُ بأنّني غارق في الحُزنِ لِدرجةِ أنّني لا أستطيع التّفكيرَ بِوضوح

Phrase 7: مِنَ المُؤسِفِ حَقًا أَن

It’s truly unfortunate that

Mina almuʼsifi ḥaqan an

Examples

أمثلة

It's truly unfortunate that things ended this way

من المؤسِفِ حَقًا أن تنتهي الأمورُ بِهذا الشَّكل

It's truly unfortunate that all this effort goes to waste

من المؤسِفِ حَقًا أن يَضيعَ كُلّ هذا الجُهدِ بِلا نتيجة

It's truly unfortunate that some people don't understand the value of what they have

من المؤسِفِ حَقًا أنّ بعضَ الأشخاصِ لا يفهمون قيمةَ ما لديهم

Phrase 8: كُلُّ شَيءٍ يَبدو كَئِيبًا

Everything seems gloomy

Kullu shayʼin yabdw kaʼīban

Examples

أمثلة

Everything seems gloomy since he left my life

كُلُّ شيءٍ يبدو كَئيبًا مُنذُ رَحيلهِ عن حَياتي

In this rainy weather, everything looks gloomy.

في هذا الطَّقسِ الماطِرِ، كُلُّ شيءٍ يبدو كَئيبًا

After the bad news, everything feels gloomy, and I can't find anything to lift my spirits.

بَعدَ الأخبارِ السَّيئةِ، كُلُّ شيءٍ يبدو كَئيبًا، ولا أجِدُ ما يَرفعُ مَعنويّاتي
